Big day at RIE!

rie.jpg

Sean made his way to the deck today at our RIE class. Proud mama that I am, I almost started crying but managed to keep my cool and enjoy sitting outside and watching him play.

RIE classes our held at this really cool space in Silverlake. It's a completely kid-friendly space where he can roll around and explore. Usually he plays for a little while in the main room then looks for me, gets tired or hungry. Today he played for the entire class (90 minutes straight!), explored the whole room, climbed over the doorjam and onto the padded deck.

Here's the basic RIE philosophies:

  • ¤ Basic trust in the child to be an initiator, an explorer and a self-learner
  • ¤ An environment for the child that is physically safe, cognitively challenging and emotionally nurturing
  • ¤ Time for uninterrupted play
  • ¤ Freedom to explore and interact with other infants
  • ¤ Involvement of the child in all care activities to allow the child to become an active participant rather than a passive recipient
  • ¤ Sensitive observation of the child in order to understand his or her needs
  • ¤ Consistency and clearly defined limits and expectations to develop discipline

It might sound like common sense, but you would be surprised how overprotective parents can be. RIE is more parent training than anything else.

    The Good Movie...

    victor.jpg

Today's neighborhood hero is Victor. He is the manager of the Los Feliz 3 movie theater. Every other Wednesday he gets to work early and opens up the theater for a bunch of entertainment starved parents and their offspring. It's a "Bring the Baby" matinee at 11am. None of us even care what the movie is, we're just happy to be there.

Most of the babies are pretty little and sleep or nurse through the film, if you're lucky.

This week we saw "The Good Thief" with Nick Nolte. I loved it, but I don't have much to compare it to. We were all talking about the difference between going to a movie and renting a movie. There's is truly something magical about a movie theater and Victor let's us back into that world every other Wednesday.

    Happy Easter!

With Aunt Kelly, Momo and a picture of Daddy for comparison. He's definitely his dad's kid, but I think he is starting to look like me just a little.

I will wreak havoc one day!

    addmacher.jpg

We refer to this toy, affectionately, as the "A.D.D. Maker". The first time we put him inside of it Sean went absolutely nuts over all the different things to do and he tried to do them all at once.

The boys of Fojimoto were over for dinner before their gig, so Sean spent some quality time outside while we conversed.

    Happy Bday Justin!?!

Shannon and Justin had a fun bbq on Saturday, but this is the only pic I can find of the event. We are a little Sean focused these days... their backyard is very pretty and we all enjoyed lounging on the lawn!

    Happy Six-Month Birthday Baby Boy!

    bdayboy.jpg

Sean crosses the six-month mark today. He is seriously contemplating crawling and drooling over the thought of having teeth! We're taking a long walk and going out to dinner to celebrate, perhaps he'll party with some mashed bananas with a candle?!?
